Larry Clifford Home from Hospital

Larry Clifford is home from St. Helena Hospital, recuperating from serious abdominal operations.

It was a long, painful, stay and Larry looks a little wan, but he exudes the southern graciousness for which he is known.

Larry and Donna have lived here for 39 years. Larry is "Mr. Howell Mountain Elementary School." He began work there as a teacher, then served 16 years as principal. Now he is on the Board of Trustees, helping the School recover from serious financial problems.

During Larry's principalship, enrollment was about 120. (This year it is down to 51.) He helped a lot of Angwin children through their early years, and enjoys the appreciation of their parents.

Larry's friends wish him a speedy recovery.

McCoy Back Home!

Lyle McCoy, former Fire Chief, school teacher, civic leader, and veteran ambulance driver, is out of the hospital. He is recovering from heart bypass surgery.

So, give him a few days rest before visiting.

Lyle, We're glad you're home again!

Angwin Streets Get $400,000 Paving
Most of Angwin streets got a new paving surface a few days ago. The whole subdivision off Clark Way, plus Sky Oaks and the full length of White Cottage amounted to the largest paving project ever in Angwin. Howell Mountain Road down to Pope Valley had been paved a few days earlier.
County Highway Maintenance Chief Lance Heide reported that the Angwin work required 7,000 tons of hot asphalt. The contractor engaged 20 double-bottomed trucks to haul material from the Syers batch plant in Napa to Angwin. Crews will be finishing the striping and shoulder backing for several days yet.
Heide reported the cost at approximately $400,000. "This is really the first top-quality treatment of those streets in 30 years," he said.
This major improvement will add thousands of dollars to the value of houses located on these streets.

A 911 Call for Lyle McCoy
Over a period of many years, Lyle McCoy has taken
calls in the night to take someone to the hospital. A former fire chief and volunteer ambulance driver, Lyle has been the guy who lifted the stretcher and offered words of encouragement to someone in pain, from a automobile accident, a broken hip, or a heart attack.
Two days ago, the 911 call was for Lyle.
The call was radio'd to the ambulance corps and they turned out in force, to help one of their own.
McCoy is scheduled for by-pass heart surgery on
Thursday. He is in our prayers.

Shogren's Moving to Arizona
Dwight and Verna Shogren have moved, to Oracle, AZ,outside Tucson.
Dwight has taken a job with Home Depot there, managing installations.
The Shogren's have lived in Angwin for 17 years, raised their children here and been in and out of many, many homes, helping us with remodeling, emergency repairs, termite inspections . . you name it. Wonderful people.
So, thanx, Dwight and Verna. We will miss you, but hope you love Arizona.
Herbert Ford Honored by College
PUC has named civic leader Herb Ford as one of its "exceptional alumni." It would take a lot of space to list all the ways Herb has contributed to the College and to this community. Here are just a few:
He has served as president of the Angwin Community Council for 18 years.
He has been a volunteer fireman for 7 years.
He has served the College as vice president for PR, Development, and Alumni Affairs, and still works part time - the veteran consultant in the Alumni office.
He has written 10 books and taught many College PR and journalism courses.
He has served his church denomination as director of press relations at international General Conferences.
He has received the top international award for his skills as a fund-raiser for a number of Adventist organizations.
He founded the Pitcairn Islands Study Center, located at PUC, and is the internationally recognized expert on that remote little island where English mutineers from the Bounty found refuge.
I am sure we have forgotten something, but not this:
Herb Ford has racked up a lifetime of service which has won him the appreciation of his church, the applause of his college, and the affection of his community.

Howell Mountain Road Repaving
Napa County completed repaving Howell Mountain Road last week, from the College to Pope Valley. The three-mile length of two-lane road was accomplished in just three days by Evans Grading & Paving.
A procession of big trucks hauled 6400 tons of asphalt up the hill, to a paving machine which put down a 2-1/2-inch blanket.
The job was done under a contract which included several other major projects totaling $2 million for all.
Ken Johansen is head of our County Dept. of Public Works, which administered the contract.
Lance Heide, Road Maintenance Supervisor, saw that the job was done right.

In the Spotlight . . . One of our Own
One of the fun things of the Spring season is the Follies du Valle, staged in Yountville last week. This is hometown talent at its best. The youngest player - 4 years old. The oldest - 84.
Lots of Angwinites in the audience - delighted to see one of our own. Tall, red-haired Karen Miller starred in several big scenes. In a bright red and white outfit, jitter-bugging in the "Zoot Suit Riot" number. Later, in sophisticated basic black, in a quartet singing "The Boy from New York City." Lots of applause for Maxine's talented young lady.

The Shanghai Schoolmates
Seven Angwin people motored to Leoni Meadows last week for a reunion of alumni of the Far Eastern Academy in Shanghai, China. This was where you went to school if you were eight to 15 years old and your parents were Adventist missionaries, possibly in some remote village. This was before the communists took over, of course.
The contingent from Angwin included Dorothy Myers, Evelyn Wallace, Willard & Millie Clark, Helen Lee, Rolland & Florence Howlett.

Take the Kids . . .
Pack a picnic and take the kids to the Audubon Canyon Ranch. Over on the coast. This rookery for nesting blue herons and egrets is "like Wow!". Eggs hatching often these days.
You can hike a short trail up the canyon to an overlook, and look down into 175 nests in the tops of the 250-foot redwood and fir trees. Binoculars are handy. No admission charge. Open week-ends only in May and June.
Directions: From Petaluma, take the road to Pt. Reyes Station. Then south on Rte 1, about 12 miles to the Ranch.

Myers Moving to Yountville
It will be hard to imagine this town without Kenneth and Dorothy Myers. After 40 years here, they have moved into a nice suite at the Adventist Retirement Estates, where they are surrounded by friends.
The Myers have been regular volunteers at The Neighborhood Table for years, raised their children here, and served the church in numerous ways.
Dorothy was born in China, the daughter of Merritt and Wilma Warren, the first PUC graduates to go abroad from Angwin as missionaries. That was in 1913, before World War I.
Ken and Dorothy came to Angwin in the mid-1930's, as college kids, got married and moved away. He was a Colorado wheat farmer before returning to Angwin in 1961. Ken is a guy who can do a lot of different things, and has given generously of his know-how to people in need.

Bob Strickland Killed
Angwinites were saddened to hear that Bob Strickland, long- time resident, died last week in a one-car accident.
Strickland was the College Business Manager and treasurer of Angwin Community Council for many years.
