DESCR

A 28-year-old Angwin man was among the Navy SEALs who died last week when their helicopter was shot down by insurgents in Afghanistan.
The highly skilled strike force was on a mission to rescue a beleaquered Special Forces unit. News reports were that the craft had reached its destination but was shot down by a Taliban unit as it was hovering to land.
Darrik lived in Angwin until he joined the Navy soon after graduation from St. Helena High. His father Fred Benson, and sister Briana, live in Angwin. His grandparents, Carl and Claudia, have been residents of Angwin for more than 50 years.
Darrik is remembered fondly by classmates at PUC Elementary. He spent his first high school year at PUC Prep. The Angwin Reporter carried a story about Darrik graduating from the SEALs training program in 2003. (Search: angwinreporter.com/pastPages/86.html.)
The community was shocked by the news. Old-timers cannot remember a more traumatic tragedy, and its sympathies for the family swept through the village.

Benson Family statement:
Darrik "incredibly brave and determined"

Darrik's father, Fred, released the following statement on behalf of the family last Friday:
"This week we lost our son, brother, uncle, friend, and hero. My son Darrik Benson was killed doing what he loved. He died alongside his friends and teammates, some of the bravest men this world has ever known.
"Darrik joined the United States Navy because he loved this country, the people who live here, and the freedoms we all have. Darrik was incredibly brave and determined, with a fierce sense of humor and had amazing opportunities in life because of his strengths and talents. He was truly special, not only to our family, but to this country.
"We are providing no details because we want to protect those brave men and women who are still fighting for all of us. We request that our privacy be respected, as well as the privacy of all of the families affected.
"We are deeply appreciative of the support we have received from our family, friends, our community of Angwin, Calif. and the U. S. NAVY. Darrik meant the world to us, and there will always be emptiness in our souls."

Sara Glantz, Angwin's Horse-Whisperer?
Sara Glantz, a 20-year-old who was born and raised in Angwin, is on the Dean's List at Findlay University, in Ohio, where she is taking courses in all kinds of horsey stuff. She is gunning for a double major during a four-year program. One major in Equestrian Studies and the other in Equestrian Management.
Sara's degree will give her the management skills required to operate a boarding business for valuable horses, for example.
