A Modern Retelling of Iphigenia at Aulis
The Dramatic Arts Society (DAS) of Pacific Union College will presentIphigenia 2.0 in four outdoor performances in the Angwin Amphitheatre on May 25, 26, 29 and June 1. This modern retelling of a classic tragedy brings you a war, a wedding, dancing bridesmaids, fighting soldiers and emotions going full tilt. All that in little old Angwin?
In Iphigenia, Father-king Agamemnon is forced to take his people to war against Troy to retrieve his brother's wife, Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world. After rallying his soldiers with promises of glory and spoils of war, they are forced to keep their ships in harbor because there is no wind. The gods speak and demand that Agamemnon make the ultimate sacrifice his daughter's life to prove his willingness to pay the price of war. A psychological war ensues as Agamemnon must decide whether to murder his own daughter or prove that he cannot do what he has asked his soldiers to. Tension builds as the impending war and an impending wedding come together and everyone wonders if there will be a bride or a corpse at the end of the day.
Iphigenia 2.0 is produced by the same artistic team that brought Twelfth Night to the Angwin Amphitheater last spring and Fiddler on the Roof to Lincoln Theater in the spring of 2006. Mei Ann Teo, San Francisco director and resident artist at PUC, leads a professional team that includes co-director Heather Denton, choreographer Casey Dacanay, set designer Kristen Adams, costume designer Lorie Johns and producer Cambria Wheeler.
