Danielle Herman Died This Week
After a long illness, Danielle Herman, one of Angwin's really fine people, has passed on. Danielle was almost an institution at the Howell Mountain Elementary School, where she taught literally for decades. Someone remembers that her last 27 years were giving professional and loving care to the little guys - kindergardeners and first-graders.
Mike Dirksen, a long-time colleague at the school, sent us these words, which will cause a good many Angwin parents of HMES school children to nod with approval.
"Howell Mountain School has lost a dedicated teacher and a trustworthy public servant. The passing of Danielle Herman saddens most of all her beloved family, to whom she was so precious. But those of us privileged to have been her colleagues also grieve. We knew well the high and consistent value of her educational skills and the breadth of her dedication to student achievement.
"During her tenure as a Howell Mountain School teacher, I had many opportunities, as a fellow teacher and as a parent, to appreciate Danielle Herman's work. She was an outstanding teacher who got results where they count most, in student performance and achievement.
"Soon after her retirement from the classroom Danielle Herman became a candidate for school board trustee. Her election in 2004 was a well deserved demonstration of Angwin's respect and admiration for her.
She will be missed.
