College asking $27 million
Angwin Airport may go to County
As part of its plan to divest itself of its business enterprises, Pacific Union College is offering the local airport for sale to Napa County. The asking price: $27 million.
The County is considering the possibility seriously. The air field is at about 1700 ft. elevation, offering pilots safe landing above the Valley fog. And County officials consider an up-valley airport a distinct asset. When President George Bush visited the Napa Valley a few weeks ago, the Angwin airport was the facility of choice. For some years, it was the base for fire planes and helicopters, too, and can serve that vital function again.
The College based its asking price on the possibility of realizing at least that much money from sale of the 87 acres for homesites. The County would, undoubtedly, do its own appraisal. The County would want to bring the facility up to par for accommodation of more and larger planes. A figure of $9 million is being bandied about for that work.
An official from the Federal Aviation Agency has visited the site and suggested that the County may be able to obtain a federal grant for evaluating the airport, and also looking at other potential up-valley sites. Some months from now, the County and PUC may find themselves in serious negotiations.
The money will be a big step in solving the College's financial problems.
